ACADEMIC YEAR

The academic year for the SFM Coaching is open for the entire calendar year and offers lessons year round. SFM Coaching has two academic semesters during the school year. The two semesters follow the school year format however, our classes are year round.

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

SFM Coaching admits students of any race, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identification, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identification, or ethnic origin in administration of its education policies, admission policies, or other SFM Coaching administered programs.

PREPARATION

Please make sure your child has his/her instrument each week. Ex. If playing on a reeded instrument, we suggest at least two additional reeds in case to be prepared. Please download to an appropriate device the app for Smartmusic. Class materials will be provided. Consistency for classes is very important.
Practicing -- this is an open-ended subject! Depending on how long the student has been taking classes and the level, practice time varies. It can also vary depending on the family’s schedule. Ideally, the student will practice every day working through the assignments. Realistically, encourage them to “play” as much as they can.

It is important to keep open communication with the teacher who will let you know if there needs to be improvement.

INSTRUMENT

It is always an advantage to have a decent instrument to play. However, whatever instrument you use should be in good working order. We have a list of local instrument locations to rent or purchase from if the need arises.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Unless written notice is given to the studio, permission is granted to SFM Coaching and its operators to seek medical treatment for the participant in the event they are not able to reach a parent or guardian. Parent/Guardian must also submit written notice for any physical/mental problems, restrictions, or conditions.

PHOTOS/VIDEOS

Occasionally we post photos of lessons and videos of student performances on our website, Facebook page, YouTube channel and on marketing collateral. Please contact Steven if you DO NOT wish to have a student’s image posted or printed.

RELEASE OF LIABILITY

Parents, legal guardians of minor students and adult students fully waive and relinquish any and all claims against SFM Coaching and its owners, teachers, officers, agents and employees from illnesses, injuries or damages as a result of participating in any activities or classes in any way associated with SFM Coaching. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless SFM Coaching from any and all claims resulting in illnesses, injuries, damages arising out of, connected with, or in any way associated with the activities of any of the programs.

What should I look for in a music teacher?

A good music teacher should understand that everyone learns differently. Their primary objective is to present the information in a way that is clear and understandable; even a creative way to explain any ideas and concepts. They should be able to spot problems and offer solutions. They should make the lessons fun and enjoyable! They should be encouraging and supportive. Above all else, they should have a positive attitude!

What is the best age to start?

For children, it really depends on the instrument and their interest level. For wind instruments (brass and woodwinds) it is advisable to start around 9 or 10; around 4th grade.

do you teach adults?

It is never too late to start, or to pick up lessons again! It’s also a great way to connect and do something with your child!

Do i have to sing opera?

While I do have a background in opera and musical theatre, I do not try to shift your focus to singing opera. Every voice is different. Breathing and tongue positioning are universal through all genres. Sing whatever music you like, and I will help you to sound your best.

What instruments do you teach?

I teach Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion and some Strings. I also teach voice. I teach instruments like voice and I teach voice like an instrument. Contact me if you want a full list of instruments or if you are unsure whether I teach it or not.

where do lessons take place?

I actually come to you! I find that for children especially, it’s easier to help them to focus if they are in an environment that is comfortable and familiar. I also allow for the parents to sit in on the lessons as well.
